What can we learn from studying old fish bones?
We have many types of relationships with other animals; for example, animals play a role in our lives as food, pets, and symbols. Investigating how animals are integrated into human lives helps us understand our past.
Fish bones are abundant at archaeological sites in coastal, island, and other aquatic areas across the world. They provide important clues about how people lived in the past because fish are entangled in people’s lives from the moment they are captured, processed, and eventually consumed and discarded. I analyze fish remains to understand how these daily activities shaped people’s identity, their inter-relationships and their dynamic interactions with their surrounding environment.
I love to share what I do and to inspire others to join this unique and rewarding field of study!
